Our First Lazy Compost Reveal – Nature Did the Work!

We’re excited to share the results of our very first official compost dig—and they were even better than we expected!

This was a “lazy compost” method: no turning, no watering, just a simple dump-and-go system placed directly on the grass. We added only raw fruit and vegetable scraps—no meats, no cooked food—and let nature take its course.

While we didn’t see any worms, we were surprised to find ants had become the main digesters, breaking everything down naturally.

The result? About six inches of rich, earthy compost—perfect for nourishing garden beds.

Aside from a few short-lived smells in the beginning and during warm weather, there were no major odors, and no issues with pests or animals (even our dog ignored it!).

This is living proof that composting doesn’t have to be complicated. With just a little space and patience, nature can turn your kitchen scraps into garden gold—no fuss required.

After a couple of years Black Soldier Flies showed up and now they are the main digesters. We have moved our compost to a new location and now we added cooked food waste, dairy, meat and fats (all the things that are not recommended).

Unfortunately, we have found the odor is worse with these added food wastes but perhaps we just need to give more time and allow nature to find its way? We will give it a few months and if the odor continues we may be forced to resort back to raw vegitation only.
